Chronic tonsillitis


Aetiology :
  1. Repeated attack of acute tonsillitis
  2. Inadequate treatment
  3. Repeated and persistence of infection in the nose and paranasal sinuses
Clinical features :
Symptoms :
  1. Recurrent sore throat
  2. Difficulty in swallowing
  3. Bad smell( Halitosis)
  4. Hawking
Signs : Four cardinal signs
  1. Tonsils – hypertrophied or atrophied.
  2. Congested anterior pillars.
  3. Inspissated pus will come out from tonsils on giving pressure by tongue depressor.
Both the jugulo-digastric lymph nodes are enlarged and tender
Diagnosis :
  1. From history
  2. From Signs

Investigations :
For treatment purpose and for general anaesthesia. Not for diagnosis.

Treatment : Tonsillectomy under general anaesthesia.
